Fall River…

For the months of May and June I prefer to spend much of my time in northeastern Shasta County fishing the Fall River, located near the storied agriculture towns of Fall River Mills and McArthur.

Fall River is CA largest spring creek and is part of one of the largest spring-fed networks in the entire country, by volume. Fall River is a very popular wild trout fishery (rainbow trout) and has sort of a committed following in the fly fishing community. It’s one of northern California’s hallowed waters for sure…

Fall River is known for technical trout fishing. The water is glass clear, flat & slick while it meanders slowly though an ancient volcanic valley. The river is weedy and full of aquatic bugs, most notably the variety of “pmd” mayflies that produce epic spinnerfalls and emergence events that drive the fishing in the first half of the season. These wild trout are educated by their environment and will scrutinize not only the number of tails on your fly but the slightest deficiencies in your presentation. There are few situations less frustrating or more rewarding than finally earning a rise and an eat from a PHD educated spring creek trout.

We spend a lot of the “early days” of the season on the upper most reaches of Fall River. We have been partnering with Travel Creel, a hospitality company that hosts and caters our group trips along with organizing our lodging accommodations and stream access (at the old Spinnerfall Lodge). It’s an awesome arrangement that offers amazing dining and incredible atmosphere - many folks who have booked this trip return the next season. Oh, and the fly fishing is amazing with most of our focus on sight casting dry flies to big, rising trout!

For more info on the Upper Fall River trips please reach out to me for more info. These dates in May and June are pre-set and limited to 8 anglers max. Group size per guide is 1 or 2 anglers. There are also other accommodations options that we can discuss for fishing Fall River that do not involve catered meals. But again availability is limited so don’t sleep on it as most bookings are made way in advance…
