Lower Sacramento River…
Game on.
It’s early March and I have officially segued from steelhead fly gear on the Trinity River to trout fly fishing gear on the Lower Sacramento River. We are drift boat fishing every day on the Lower Sac from Redding down through Cottonwood (or wherever conditions are best).
Fishing has been solid everyday. I have been on the river almost daily since late Feb and beginning of March.
We are seeing thick hatches of bwo and pmd mayflies in the middle of the day right now. These hatches are prolific especially on the rainy/cloudy days (Do Not fear the forecast!). On the sunnier days we will continue to see these bugs along with the little dark spring caddis. In addition to these bugs there are ever present stonefly nymphs that are active along with lots of midges and an egg bite, too.
The weather looks to be a bit iffy for the next few days (March 9-11) so I am taking some much needed time off for a few days. We will be back at it in the beginning of next week.
March is pretty much booked up now - But - I still have a few April dates and lots of available dates in May-June for you fareweather souls. Get a hold of me ASAP to book some spring or early summer dates for fly fishing on the Lower Sac this season!
Looking ahead, for those of you who like to walk & wade our higher mountain freestone and tailwater rivers (Upper Sac, McCloud, Pit River) May-July will be a great time to dust off the waders, boots and wading staff. With the wet winter and snowpack we have received we should enjoy a fantastic cold-water season on all of our local walk & wade rivers. Dry Fly action should be the best it’s been in years as the rivers will be flowing well into the Summer Season.
Stay tuned…
