Spring is Poking its Head Around the Corner…
It’s mid February and despite the cold, wet weekend we are currently experiencing… there are days where it feels as though spring is just around the corner. I have seen the blue sky and the green hillsides beginning to pop and spring season will be here soon.
Spring is a fantastic time to come fishing in northern California. We have a lot of options and destinations for fly fishing. Some days it’s tough to even make a decision on where to go…
Steelhead on the Trinity? Nothing better than a warm spring float on the Trinity River with a chance at some dry fly fishing during the afternoon mayfly hatch. There are some absolute stud halfies around this season and a few brown trout, too. These fish will be a blast on dry flies on a 5wt rod this spring.
Big wild trout on the Lower Sac? Feb-May is some of the best fishing of the year under comfortable weather conditions. Drift boat fishing is the way to go. Come check out the premiere tailwater trout fishery of the west coast.
Bass fishing the lakes? There are some incredible bass fishing opportunities near Redding. If you have not given bass fishing a try you don’t know a good time. The lake will be full pool again this year!
For the upcoming weeks I will be spending most of my guide days on the Lower Sac w/ a few days still on the Trinity and some personal days fishing Shasta Lake for bass (keeping my finger on that pulse for later on).
It’s no secret that the Lower Sac is an amazing springtime fishery. Some of the best hatches of the year happen from late Feb thru June on this river… with March, April, May being prime-time. Daily pmd, bwo, spring caddis, yellow sallies, MB, and many others will be popping over the next few months. Flows should be awesome this spring/summer and higher than avg with a full Shasta Lake behind it.
