Winter Steelhead Fishing Been Great…
I realize that it’s been some time since I last updated the Blog. The Trinity River has been all-in-all pretty darn good these past few weeks. After the 2 weeks of incessant rain in early January - which blew the river out - the Trinity has dropped and recovered and come into great shape. The steelhead run this year has been solid!
The flows remain high but very fishable. Water in some sections in the upper river have been holding that good color green (sediment from Grass Valley Creek primarily) for weeks now. Water in JC is a bit clearer and higher.
We are seeing good numbers of healthy, bright, fish… many have their adipose fins intact. We have also encountered some decent sized & heavy fish this season. There have been several steelhead that I have seen recently that were pushing the 30+” size around 8-12lbs. The steelhead seem well fed…
I consider February to be a fantastic month on the Trinity, especially considering the great water conditions we are experiencing this season!
It’s not too late to book a stlhd trip for this winter season… get a hold of me asap for open dates (no more online calendar). Call, text or email me for available dates.
If you are not a cold weather, early bird, steelhead fanatic… do not fret… Trout Season has begun on the Lower Sac as well. Sometimes it’s our Plan B option this time of year… but as the days get deeper into February it becomes a solid Plan A option for us. Fly fishing the Lower Sac can be phenomenal during the late winter months! In fact, I will often say that Feb-May is my favorite time to fish the Lower Sac River.
Hope everyone is having a great first quarter of the new year… looking forward to what’s in store for 2023!
